Root's book on play of the hand is the best textbook on the topic. It is one of only three bridge books I recommend. It is written by an American for Americans. The book's organization is fantastic. I've written thousands of pages of instructional material for college students, and I think anyone can learn from studying this book. I'm not reviewing here the content of the book, but rather a ruinous physical limitation of the book itself: it was printed on cheap paper, and the thing became saturated with a rust-colored fungus (note: I'm not a biologist. I'm assuming it's a fungus) before I could even read it, and I had to throw it away. My recommendation: unless you live in a very dry climate, buy the Kindle version, and enjoy a fungus-free read for a cheaper price.
